What’s this all about?

Hi! I’m Kayli Householder, and my mom and I would like to invite you to an upcoming “Oh, Stuff and Nonsense” party night.

The name of the party comes from a quote from Anne of Green Gables, and to steal from a few other favorite movies of ours, let us explain what this is all about:

Public school is back in session, and that means that a lot of my non-home schooled friends are back to the grind and too busy for fun. “This is the most tragical thing that has ever happened to me…” (Anne of Green Gables) so, I’ve decided to do something about it!

SOMETIME SOON, we’re holding another homeschoolers teen-night at my house and we want YOU to be there!  So, please do “come over… It’s dull as tombs around here!” (Little Women)

This will be good for you!

That’s because “feminine weaknesses and fainting spells are the direct result of our confining young girls to the house, bent over their needlework, and restrictive corsets.” (Anne of Green Gables) So, don’t you think it’s about time that we do something different??

One thing I know for sure, we “have so many extraordinary gifts; how can [we] expect to lead an ordinary life? [We're] ready to go out and – and find a good use for [our] talent… embrace [our] liberty. And see what wonderful things come of it.” (Little Women)

And I promise, there will be no “derision… disappointed hopes… [nor] acute misery of the worst kind.” (Pride and Prejudice)

What to Expect

For our first Oh, Stuff and Nonsense party, we watched Anne of Green Gables (part 1), made homemade pizzas, and played games to get to know each other. We have a few surprises in store for our next one.

Sorry, no boys are ever allowed. We girls sometimes just need to get together where “we bear our souls and tell the most appalling secrets”. Boys are “humorless poppycocks, in my limited experience,” and we all know that “over the mysteries of female life there is drawn a veil best left undisturbed.” (Little Women)

If You’re Late…

Well, just don’t be late. I don’t want to have to tell you that “we’ve been expectorating you for hours!” (Little Women)

Also, when you come, watch your language. For example, “please don’t say ‘awful’; it’s slang.” (Little Women) And “if you cannot think of anything appropriate to say you will please restrict your remarks to the weather.” (Sense and Sensibility)

What to Wear

Q: What shall I wear? “I don’t have an opera dress.”

A: Don’t worry, “where we are sitting, we shall not be so… formal.” (Little Women)

NEW Information for Parents – PLEASE READ

(A message from Kayli’s Mom, Leslie Householder)

Dear Parents,

THANK YOU to all who supported last month’s OSAN party! It was a grand experiment and we had a great time.

We had no concept of how far each of you had to travel to support the event until we mapped out everyone’s trip home – WOW! You are some seriously dedicated parents! We were happy to bring the girls home, because we wanted to know where everyone lived. Kayli has been eager to meet other home schooled girls and learn more about their lives, so last month’s party was a huge success. But we also realized that it wasn’t feasible to take all the girls home in one van as originally planned, because according to the mapping program, it would have taken 2 1/2 hours to get everyone home. So at the last minute, we split them into two cars and got it done in just over an hour. Whew!

We absolutely have NO regrets – we only have all the more RESPECT for each of you who traveled so far to participate!

Here are some CHANGES that we hope will make it easier for your daughter to participate, and easier for us to keep hosting it.

1) The schedule has changed – the party will go from 6-10 pm, instead of 6-11 pm. If you must travel quite a distance to participate, consider turning it into a date night (or temple night if you’re LDS) with your spouse! For example: drop off your daughter at 6, get to a movie or session by 6:30 or 7, enjoy a dinner together or shop until 9:30 or so, and then swing by again to pick up your daughter at 10. If you absolutely cannot manage both trips, let me know and I’ll see if I can help you find a carpool.

2) Dinner: this time we’re having spaghetti and nonsense. (Your daughter will have to show up to find out what that is.)

3) Snacks: for the movie portion of the evening, we encourage your daughter to bring her favorite snack to share.
